Architectural design studio Hoedemaker Pfeiffer has renovated this peaceful weekend retreat located in Cle Elum, a city in Kittitas County, Washington. The owners of this home were past clients of the architects and purchased one of the firm’s Trendy recent designs to use as their vacation home.
While the location and general layout of this 3,000 square foot dwelling were a great fit, there were some details that needed to be changed. The modern challenge was to work within an existing envelope to create more usable space while updating the look and feel of the interiors to match the image of a young, active family of four.
Project Team: Architecture: Hoedemaker Pfeiffer | Interior Design: Amy Baker Interior Design | Construction: Nine Pine Developments | Landscape: Kenneth Philp Landscape Architects
On the main floor the existing plan was modified to conclude a library adjacent to the living room. On the second floor a modern bunk room and separate play area for the kids was created. The goal of the interior palate and furniture design was to reflect the landscape that surrounds the house – calm, inviting and comfortable.
In an effort to forget about the presence of neighbors and protect from wind this building was created with two courtyards that help focus views on the undeveloped beauty of the valley below. The shape of the building also allows light on three sides of multiple rooms. Clerestory windows animate a bridge in the great room that connects loft spaces.
What We Love: This peaceful weekend retreat is beautifully surrounded by dense trees, offering plenty of privacy for nature lovers. Light-filled living spaces create a bright and airy feel throughout this home, while also creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection courtesy of the large windows. Overall, the design of this home offers plenty of space for family quality-time.

The interior furniture budget for the project was limited, so the designer and owner worked together to find classic solutions from major retailers and then paired them with custom and vintage accessory items. The result is a place where you simply want to be.
